Welcome! United for Safe Schools Novato (USSN) was established in Spring 2002. We are a grassroots group of individuals and agencies promoting equity and diversity awareness and advocating for educational materials, practices and policies that protect and include all students, staff, families and individuals regardless of actual or perceived race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual orientation, religion, class, appearance, language or national origin. Our steering committee meets quarterly to guide our priorities and activities. USSN is one of the recipients of the 2002 Marin Community Foundation Neighborhood Achievement Awards, with a cash grant of $5,000. Co-founders, Lynne Wasley and Annan Paterson, were awarded the 2002 and 2003 (respectively) Martin Luther King Humanitarian Awards by the County of Marin Human Rights Commission. Co-Chair Lynne Wasley was also the 2005 City of Novato Multicultural Commission’s dinner honoree. Our organization has been featured on abcnews.com and in the Ford Foundation magazine. Most importantly, ours is a voice of reason and inclusion in the Novato community. Join Us!

For more than seven years, and as part of the NUSD Equity Action Plan, staff, parents and students have worked on the development of diversity curriculum and policies to help teach students respect and tolerance for differences. We believe these materials and policies will help foster a safer school environment and one more conducive to learning. We know that when understanding and compassion are developed through education, teasing and bullying behaviors diminish. USSN presents an opportunity to let the NUSD and our larger community know, in a collective and reasonable voice, that Novato supports the use of inclusive diversity education and firmly believes in human and civil rights for all.
Some of our on-going goals and activities include:

  • Advancing and monitoring the use of NUSD approved diversity materials, including the video “That’s a Family!,” and encouraging their increased usage at all school sites.
  • Monitoring NUSD policies and procedures overseeing equity, safety and diversity/respect, to help ensure their equal implementation as well as inclusiveness.
  • Supporting and working towards implementing the NUSD Equity Action Plan and Mission Statement in their entirety.
  • Educating our community through the use of: dialogue, editorial letters, community gatherings, diversity video presentations, and forums.
  • Reviewing and promoting relevant, appropriate and quality diversity and anti-bullying materials as they become available.
  • Recognizing and acknowledging outstanding contributions to diversity education and awareness in our city through the annual "Stand Up Novato!" awards dinner.

Let’s all participate in bringing the issues of respect and tolerance for ALL back to the mainstream—where it belongs!

In Novato, there are:

  • neighbors of all races
  • taxpayers of all faiths and religions
  • residents of all sexual orientations
  • families with many different structures
  • homes with different languages
  • students of all socio-economic backgrounds
  • community members with different abilities
  • both women and men in our workforce and homes

Let’s respect our diversity!

Get involved and let your voice be heard by our school and civic leaders!
