“Surprise” NOVATO ADVANCE – sent June 2, 2003

I am so proud of school board members Newman, Millerick, Collins and King and of Novato for approving the diversity materials, including “That’s a Family,” on June 3. And I refuse to be disheartened by the few individuals who keep writing mean-spirited letters to the editor.

Did you know that the diversity materials are funded by a grant from the Marin Community Foundation? They won’t impact the school budget.

Did you know that gays and lesbians and their families live in Novato? In one of last week’s letters, the writer stated that Novato shouldn’t be concerned about ”serving political issues outside of our Novato community.”

Surprise! Gays and lesbians are part of Novato and their children attend Novato public schools.

Now we will begin the hard job of keeping them safe, stopping the teasing, and teaching respect for all students and their families.
